Great podcast and supplying plenty for me to steal for an essay I’m thinking of writing i.e. there are some wonderfully quotable moments.
I started to forget my age when in my 20s. I thought, “Am I 22? 23?” It didn’t seem to matter.
On your disturbing acquaintance who accused you of abusing his daughter, there are indeed people who would probably be described nowadays as “sociopath” – the word you use here – though I always preferred the term “psychopath”. It seems less mealy mouthed to me.
We have a person who works with a disabled adult on a 1:1 basis and this helper is a blatantly manipulative type who you can never be sure of. She can appear all very cute and helpful and then she is saying weird things behind your back as well as leading her charge in a very obvious way – which is the most despicable thing. I have a disabled son myself and I know that it’s the easiest thing in the world to lead these vulnerable adults anywhere you want – putting words into their mouths etc.
Some people are just downright fucking evil.
The theme of those Epstein paedophile rings brings up a similar device that was used in relation to covid i.e. that those who were sceptical of covid were immediately assigned to the Right. Similarly, those who start talking about pedophilia are branded as Right wingnuts.
In this connection I note that Jim Caviezel (of Passion of the Christ fame) made a The Sound of Freedom, a movie about child sex trafficking which got a huge thumbs down from the liberal media – and hark at me saying this because I now sound exactly like one of those reactionaries I used to sneer at – and yet this is the game being played here. “The Left” were those who were right behind the covid/lockdown/vax programme. Therefore those who opposed that were “The Right”. And if you start to talk about Epstein’s little sex parties, you will quickly be denounced as one of those reactionary nuts.
Just watched the podcast. Mark Carney came up for a minute, but boy do I have a lot to say about that. The usual suspects on my Facebook have been ecstatic and sharing memes comparing his CV with Conservative leader Pierre Poilevre's and hailing Carney as Canada's new savior. I get it when a liberal charlatan at least has some lefty cred like Trudeau, but Carney is straight from the banks and the asset management class. Not just Goldman, but he was a manager at Brookfield, which makes its business buying rental property and jacking up rents. What exactly do my liberal friends think this guy is going to do? Re-fund medicare and the CBC? No, he'll be taking meetings with Blackrock and Vanguard lobbyists, then tell Canadians it's time to face some hard truths about what what we can't afford, and we will all be relieved that a responsible liberal is selling off our social programs rather than Poilievre, who would be "worse".
He comes right out of the Brian Mulroney school of politics. That Conservative prime minister from the 1980s didn't bother running for office to serve constituents. That's too working class for a multi-millionaire. Just wait for the opening and buy your way to the top. We used to loathe these kinds of people. Between Carney, Merz, and Trump, you've got the bankers and real-estate barons who used to buy off politicians, now just cutting out the middle man and becoming the politicians themselves. Meanwhile you look at Poilievre. Not that I'd vote for him, but there's a guy who was born into hard times and raised by a gay dad, who he loves and acknowledges. I wonder if he would have swung to the left if the left hadn't abandoned the working class. JD Vance is another with a similar background. Used to be that the conservatives were the ones born with silver spoons in their mouths.
